African Dance Workshop

The Rising Star dancers participated in an African Dance Workshop sponsored by the Sumter County Cultural Commission. Commissioner Betty Burgess conducted the workshop along with two very talented Kenyan friends. The dancers watched clips of daily life in Kenya, and tasted traditional Kenyan food. They were taught the traditional dance steps that derive from daily activities such as fetching water, harvesting food and religious worship. “Dance is 3 things” Ms. Burgess said, “Rhythm, posture and listening. We are born with rhythm, just listen to your heart and you will feel your own rhythm.”

The African dance workshop did more than just teach dance steps from another country. They shared with the all of us that dance encompasses all emotions. Dance celebrates life. When you play an instrument or dance & sing it doesn’t matter how much you have, we are all connected universally.
